Ideal for any summertime event including a day at the races, garden party or wedding this added accessory will add personality to any outfit and be an instant conversation starter. Pearls are one of the three birthstones for the month of June and were recognised in Ancient Rome as a sign of wealth and social status. Pearls were also believed to promote a long and healthy life. We can’t wait to see how you incorporate different colours into this design, be sure to share your versions with us via our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages.

Step One

Cut approximately 1m of 0.4mm wire and secure it to the top of a hair comb, about 3 prongs in from the right by wrapping it around 3 or 4 times. Make sure to tuck in any sharp pieces with flat nose pliers.

Step Two

(If you have feathers with a metal loop at the bottom then thread a feather onto the wire itself for extra security), then wrap the wire around the base of the feather and the comb to secure it into a position so that it sits across the top right hand corner of the comb.

Step Three

repeat step 2 by threading on a contrasting coloured feather and attaching it to the comb so it sits nicely to the left of the first feather, wrap the wire around the comb until it is positioned on the far right.

Step Four

repeat step 2 again adding a third contrasting coloured feather to the far right prong, this time angling the feather so that it hides where the first two feathers are attached, ensuring the wire ends up on the far right of the comb.

Step Five

Thread on a pearl and wrap the wire around the end few prongs, repeat this twice more with contrasting coloured pearls to create a small cluster of pearls which cover where the third feather was attached.

Step Six

Bring the wire to the back of the comb underneath the third feather and start adding a random mix of coloured pearls along the top of the comb (baroque and potato pearls are ideal for an organic look), by adding 1 pearl at a time to the wire and wrapping it securely to the top or prongs of the comb.

Step Seven

Continue repeating step 6 until the whole of the top of the comb is covered by pearls. Trim off excess wire and tuck in the end of the wire.

Useful Tip

If you do run out of wire at any point you can always add a new piece in the same way as step 1, just remember to tuck in any sharp ends.
