How to create a pearl kumihimo necklace

pearl kumihimo necklace

Step One

Cut 4 x approx 1 metre pieces of beading thread, pass all 4 threads through a crimp bead, then a Jump ring, back through the crimp bead and secure with Crimping Pliers so that the Jumping is in the centre and you now have 8 threads to work with

Step Two

Thread half a strand of Pearls onto each of your 8 threads and use the bead stopper technique at the end of each one to prevent all the Pearls falling off.

Step Three

Attach a small weight to the Jump ring and place it down through the hole in the Kumihimo Disc. Position each strand into a slot on the disc so you have two pointing North, two East, two South and two to the West (On this disc use numbers 32, 8, 16 and 24)

Step Four

Start to Kumihimo in the normal way ignoring the Pearls for now until you have about an inch of braided beading thread visible underneath the disc.

Step Five

To Kumihimo start with the left hand thread at the bottom of the disc (next to number 16) and move it up to the left hand side of the top two threads (between numbers 30 & 31).

Step Six

Now move the right hand thread from the top of the disc (between numbers 32 & 1) and move it down to the right hand side of the remaining thread at the bottom

Step Seven

[7a] Turn the whole disc counter clockwise (left) by a quarter of a turn so number 24 should now be at the bottom, [7b] then repeat steps 5 & 6.

Step Eight

[8a] Once you have about an inch of braided beading thread start to add the Pearls. [8b] Each time you move a thread, slide a pearl up to the centre and tuck it under the weave before securing the thread into its new slot.

Step Nine

Repeat step 8 until you have your desired length of braided Pearls, don't forget to leave an inch of braid without any Pearls at the end to balance the design (you'll need to release the bead stoppers as you get to the end).

Step Ten

Unclip all of your threads and feed them all through a crimp bead, secure with a Crimping Pliers and trim away 6 of the threads leaving 2 to work with.

Step Eleven

[11a] Thread on another crimp bead and a Jump ring before feeding the two wires back through the crimp and [11b] secure with Crimping Pliers.

Step Twelve

Cover both crimp beads with crimp covers, and add a crimp cover over your original crimp too. Add one more crimp cover next to the original one to balance the design.

Step Thirteen

Cut two pieces of chain for the sides of your necklace (the length of chain depends on how long you want your necklace to be) use Flat Nose Pliers to attach the chains to the Jump rings on each side of the necklace.

Step Fourteen

Using more Jump rings attach a Toggle Clasp to the chain to complete the necklace.
