How to make a macramé floral necklace tutorial

Learn how to a make macramé floral necklace.

Macramé originates from the 13th century and is a form of textile making using a knotting method. Most popularly used in the Victoria era for essential household items and clothing, Macramé later gained huge popularity within the Jewellery and Accessories industry especially for necklaces, anklets and bracelets. To make this beautiful necklace you will use a combination of two Macramé techniques; square and twist knot. The methods vary ever so slightly but you will be amazed by the end result. Step One

Open the bail and add the rose quartz pendant gently squeeze the bail closed.

Step Two

Cut waxed cord lengths 1 x 75cm's and 2 x 150cm's. Take the 75cm length (which is the lazy strand) and add 6 rose quartz flowers, 3 silver 4mm spacer beads, the bail with pendant, 3 silver spacer beads and 6 more rose quartz flowers. Now attach this cord to the macramé board from corner to corner to give more working space. Centre the design and with a 150cm cord hold the ends together to find the centre and position under the lazy strand after a set 3 silver spacer's.

Step Three

Working with the 2 outside cords take the left cord and place it over the centre cord forming a lower-case d shape, with the right side of the cord over the left, pass the end under the all centre cords where they cross and back up through the d loop, and pull tight

Step Four

Take the cord on the right and place it over the centre cord forming a lower case b shape, with the left cord over the right pass the end under the centre cords where they cross and back up through the b loop and pull tight. Repeat steps 3 and 4 making 2 complete square knots.

Step Five

Push up a rose quartz flower up to the knots, let the cords encase the rose quartz and make another 3 complete square knots. Repeat this until you have all 6 rose quartz with 3 square knots in-between each and ending with 3 square knots after the last

Step Six

Creating the macramé twist repeat step 3 making the d loop (the same loop on one side each time will make the macramé naturally twist) until you have 5cms of twist.

Step Seven

Square knot again until you have approx 4cms. Place the end of the square knot into the ribbon end finding and fold each side over to securely capture the knotting and hold in place.

Step Eight

Turn the macramé board and repeat steps 2-7 to make the other side of the necklace, trim away the excess cords from the ribbon findings. Add a rose quartz flower to a headpin and attach to the extender chain using the wrapped loop method
