How to create a Spiral Rope Necklace

Spiral rope necklace

Step One

Cut approx 3m Wildfire thread, thread on a beading needle and then feed on 4 x 4mm black beads, 3 x seed beads, 1 x red 4mm bead and 3 more seed beads.

Step Two

Leaving an 8 inch tail of Wildfire thread, feed the needle back through all of the black beads again and gently pull tight so it forms a loop.

Step Three

Add on 1 x 4mm black bead, 3 x seed beads, 1 x red 4mm beads, and 3 more seed beads.

Step Four

Pass the needle through the last 4 black beads including the one you added in step 3. (It helps to count backwards down the 'spine' (black) beads so you know which bead to loop the needle through).

Step Five

Gently pull the thread tight then push the seed beads over to the left of your design. Thread on 1 x black bead, 3 x seed beads, 1 x red bead and 3 more seed beads. Pass the needle in a loop through the last 4 black beads including the one you just added and gently pull tight.

Step Six

Push all the seed beads over to the left of your design and repeat step 5 until you have used all 12 of the red 4mm beads. (The design will naturally start to spiral around the spine beads as long as you always push the seed beads to the left before looping the needle through the spine beads).

Step Seven

Add 1 x black bead, 3 x seed beads and 1 x yellow 4mm bead, then 3 more seed beads. Thread the needle up through the last 4 black spine beads to form a loop as before. Continue in the same way until all the yellow beads have been used up.

Step Eight

Continue making the spiral rope in the same way using the green 6mm beads in the centre of the design, followed by the purple 6mm beads, then the blue 4mm beads and finally the pink 4mm beads.

Step Nine

Add on 9 x black 4mm beads, a crimp bead, 1cm French wire and half of your toggle clasp, feed the needle back through the crimpbead and also through the last 3 black beads and pull tight so the French wire forms a loop through the clasp. Using crimping pliers secure the crimp bead and hide with a crimp cover. Tie the thread off with a double knot between the black spinal beads and trim off any excess thread.

Step Ten

Thread the needle onto the other end of the necklace and repeat step 9 using the second half of the clasp to complete the project.
