Create a Shibori Brooch

Step One

Drawing freehand or using something to draw around cut out identical shapes one from the foundation fabric and one from the ultra suede.

Step Two

Thread the needle with fireline or c-lon tie a knot in the end and pass the needle through the pleats at one end of the Shibori ribbon.

Step Three

Place the Shibori ribbon on the foundation fabric and tack it with two or three small stitches to hold it into place.

Step Four

Bring down the Shibori ribbon onto the foundation fabric and let it naturally flow and pucker the way its wants to go and tack into place. Don't try and force it into a direction it does not want to go. Bear in mind a spot to stick the cabochon to the foundation.

Step Five

You can stuff the Shibori ribbon to pad it out with cut up scrap material before the last side is tacked down, this will give it a puffed up look. Or you can leave it flat the choice is yours.

Step Six

Bead in the valleys of the Shibori and fill in any gaps in the backing foundation that shows using stack stitch with a variety of bead sizes. Stack stitch – with your thread coming through the right side of the work pick up a size 8 and 11 seed bead, let them drop against the work and pass the needle back down through the size 8 bead missing the 11. Bring the needle back up to the right side of the work ready to add the next beads.

Step Seven

Using a combination of 8, 11's, and Swarovski crystals use the stack stitch method to fill in where the foundation is showing and embellish your piece. Use groups of 2's, 3's and 4's of size 8 seed beads using a size 11 seed bead on the end and passing the needle back through the size 8 beads.

Step Eight

Using a similar coloured thread to the ultrasuede stitch on a brooch pin.

Step Nine

Glue the ultrasuede onto the back of the piece hiding the stitching on the back of the foundation fabric. Make a peyote stitch edging all around the piece - start by picking up two size 11 seed beads and bring the needle from back to front through the ultrasuede and foundation fabric and pass the needle from right to left up through the last bead and pull the thread tight.

Step Ten

Pick up another size 11 seed bead let it drop against the work and at about a beads width, pass the needle from the front to back of the work and pull the thread through.

Step Eleven

Pass the needle from right to left up through the last bead and pull the thread tight keeping the tension taught.

Step Twelve

Continue this adding one bead at a time all the way around the edge of the piece until you meet the first bead joining the last and the first bead together. Finish by stitching a couple of overhand knots in-between beads where they will be hidden.
