Create a Regal Pendant

Learn how to make a regal pendant.

Create something inspired by regal elegance by following this step-by-step tutorial from https://www.jewellerymaker.com/. Cabochons are the perfect component to help make a statement in any piece of jewellery but pendant jewellery has been seen throughout history on some of the most famous members of the royal family. This piece of jewellery was inspired by the Tudor times with Catherine of Aragon or Anne Boleyn in mind to wear it. 1

Step One

Glue the cabochon to the backing foundation and leave to dry completely. Thread your needle with approx 1m of fire line (or a length you are comfortable working with) and tie a knot in the end. Bring the needle up from the back of the cabochon so that it exits from the side of the cabochon.

2

Step Two

Pick up 3 size 8/0 seed beads and let them drop against the cabochon, pass the needle through to the back of the backing foundation and back up between the first and the second bead, pass the needle through the second and third beads (white fire line has been used to show up against the black backing fabric).

3

Step Three

Pick up two size 8/0 seed beads and let them drop against the previous beads, pass the needle through the backing foundation after the last bead.

4

Step Four

Row 1 - Bring the needle back up through the third and fourth beads, pass the needle through the last three beads.

5

Step Five

Repeat steps three and four until you have completely surrounded the cabochon, pass the needle through five beads to finish.

6

Step Six

Row 2 – pick up one size 11/0 seed bead skip a bead in row 1 and pass the needle through the next 8/0 bead. Repeat this row picking up a 11/0 bead and passing the needle through every other bead in row 1 until the row is complete. Pass the needle through a size 11/0 bead in this row to finish (You are building up these next rows so that the beads frame the cabochon).

7

Step Seven

Row 3 – With your needle exiting from a bead in the last row now add a size 8/0 seed bead in between every other bead in row 2. Keep the tension tight aiming to pull the work together to frame the cabachon. Exit the needle out of a size 8/0 bead in this row.

8

Step Eight

Row 4 – With your needle exiting out from a size 8/0 bead add a size 15/0 seed bead in between each of the size 8/0 beads of the last row. This row forms the last row to frame the cabochon. You can now work the needle and thread through the rows of seed beads back down to row 2.

9

Step Nine

Working from row 2 add a superduo bead in between each size 11/0 seed bead all the way around the row end exiting from a super duo.

10

Step Ten

Work around the same super duo row adding a size 8/0 seed bead in between each super duo. Cut the cabochon carefully out of the backing foundation. When you reach the end of the thread cast off with a couple of stitches on the back of the backing foundation and start with a new length as in step one. Pass the needle through gaps in between beads and secure the thread on the back of the backing foundation with a couple of stitches, do not trim the thread.

11

Step Eleven

Making the bail – Bring the needle back through to the front of the pendant and working through the beads choose which super duo's form a centre point to make a bail. We have chosen four duo's to work the bail from. Work through the beads so that the thread exits from the 1st of the four super duo's add 16 size 11/0 seed beads, pass the needle through the 4th bead, work through the bail beads a few times to reinforce it. Finish by working through the backing foundation with a couple of stitches and trim the thread.

12

Step Twelve

Use two large jump rings through the bail to attach the pendant to a chain of your choice.

13

Step Thirteen

Add a pearl drop and Swarovski crystal to a headpin and attach it to the bottom centre super duo using the wrapped loop method.
